Re-roof 900,000 square feet and install solar panels
in wet conditions on a tight timeline

The solution

Hot air welding machines designed to weld at top speeds

THE STORY

ProLogis, a top global provider of distribution facilities undertook a large project to re-roof and install solar panels on the top of seven (7) warehouses in Portland, Oregon. The project was aimed to create reliable, clean energy which would be sold to Portland General Electric for distribution to its customers. ProLogis was essentially turning the roofs of their warehouses into seven mini-power plants.

ProLogis had an aggressive goal of completing this project in less than 4 months. This short timeline not only requires the appropriate staff but also the world's best and most efficient tools. When seeking out this project, ProLogis hired Northwest Solar Solutions to complete the endeavor, whom contacted Assembly Supplies Co. (ASC) to consult and provide top of the line hot air equipment.

ASC was tasked with providing the tools and machinery that could equip the project with the ability to weld 900,000 square feet of roofing material in wet, Portland weather conditions. The roofing membrane installed was fleece-backed, designed to absorb rainwater if there were leaks or in the event the surface was wet. The obstacle of rain meant that when it was dry and work could progress, work had to be done at an extremely fast rate. Knowing these factors and the ins-and-outs of the best hot air tools in the market, Assembly Supplies recommended the Leister Varimat V2 hot air welding machine.

The Varimat V2 is a Swiss manufactured machine which provides fast welding. The V2 has an adjustable guide handle that can easily be lowered to get under vents, pipes and other obstructions, making the speed of welding even faster than a non-adjustable, handled machine.

Ultimately, with the right hot air tools supplied by ASC, Northwest Solar Solutions was able to heat weld 2,389 10-feet-by-20-feet solar panels to the new roof within the desired timeline. Without the Varimat V2, it would have been extremely unlikely that the project would have been completed on time. The Leister V2 welded flawlessly, even when there are wet weather conditions that hold up project progress; every bit of gained efficiency counts!
