What is Acrylic Plastic?

Acrylic plastic, scientifically known as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), is a transparent thermoplastic known for its clarity and durability. Commonly referred to by trade names like Plexiglas, it serves as a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass in certain applications.

Acrylic’s thermoplastic nature allows it to be effectively joined using several welding techniques. Processes such as solvent welding, where a solvent softens the surfaces to be joined, and thermal methods like ultrasonic welding, which uses high-frequency vibrations to generate heat, are commonly employed. These methods create strong, durable bonds between acrylic components.

The automotive sector uses acrylic for light covers and instrument panels due to its durability and aesthetic appeal. How Strong is Acrylic Plastic?

One of the defining features of acrylic plastic is its impressive strength and durability. At room temperature, cast acrylic exhibits a tensile strength of approximately 10,000 psi (69 MPa), as per ASTM D638 standards. This high tensile strength makes acrylic suitable for applications where both clarity and structural integrity are essential.

In addition to its tensile strength, acrylic has a flexural strength of about 16,500 psi (114 MPa), meaning it can withstand bending without fracturing. However, while acrylic is strong, it can be susceptible to stress crazing—fine cracks that develop under continuous loads below its tensile strength. Therefore, it’s recommended that continuously imposed design loads do not exceed 1,500 psi (10.4 MPa) for most applications.

Welding Acrylic with PVC Welding Rods

Welding acrylic involves uniting the softened surfaces of the material, typically through the application of heat. However, welding dissimilar plastics, such as using a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) welding rod on acrylic, is generally not recommended. Dissimilar plastics cannot be welded together due to differences in their chemical compositions and melting temperatures. 

For effective welding of acrylic, it’s advisable to use welding rods made from the same material. This compatibility results in a strong, durable bond.

Acrylic is approximately 50% lighter than glass and has up to 17 times greater impact resistance. This combination reduces transportation and installation costs and boosts safety by minimizing the risk of breakage. In the rare event that acrylic does break, it fractures into dull-edged pieces rather than sharp shards like glass.

Easy to Shape

Acrylic’s malleability allows it to be molded into various shapes without compromising optical clarity. It can be easily heat-formed to craft complex designs and custom components. This is particularly beneficial in applications requiring tailored shapes, such as architectural features and specialized equipment enclosures.

Easy to Maintain & Clean

Acrylic surfaces are non-porous, which means they’re resistant to moisture and easy to clean. Regular household cleaners can effectively disinfect acrylic, which is why it is commonly used for decor items such as kitchen and bathroom splashbacks. This ease of maintenance provides long-term value.

  • High light transmittance: Clear acrylic allows 92% of light to pass through, more than standard glass. Even in thicker sheets, it maintains superior clarity for applications where transparency is necessary.
  • Chemical resistance: Acrylic is resistant to many caustic chemicals, so it’s suitable for applications involving exposure to various substances. This is particularly valuable in the medical and food service industries, where sanitation and chemical exposure are concerns.
  • Weather resistance: Acrylic’s excellent weathering properties make it suitable for outdoor applications. It can withstand exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors without significant degradation.
